Expanding Our Vision for Life
There is a quote by Edith Wharton: "Set wide the window. Let me drink the day." Whenever I read this quote, it resonates with me and inspires me to broaden my perspective on life and how I see myself.
The concept of a “life vision” refers to a clear picture of the life you want to create for yourself, encompassing your deepest desires and core values. Having a life vision is important because it serves as a guiding light, motivating and providing clarity and direction. Often, we feel stuck in our everyday routines, limited by time and resources to pursue the things we want to do in life.
Reflecting on Where You Are
There is no better time than today to start creating the life you want to live. I say this from experience. Now that I am retired, I have had the opportunity to reflect on the past, and one thing I would have done differently is to be intentional about the life I wanted to lead. Before you expand your vision, take an assessment of where you are right now. Not with criticism but with compassion and curiosity. Growth begins with awareness.
Ask yourself:
Reconnect with Your Dreams and Desires
One way to connect to your life vision is to reconnect with your dreams and desires. What did you want as a child/teen/young adult? As children, we didn’t limit our dreams. We wanted to be dancers, writers, inventors, and explorers. These dreams didn’t disappear; they just went quiet. The demands of life took precedence, leaving our dreams in the background, yet they are still there.
Try this:
Expanding What You Think Is Possible
One of the biggest blocks to vision is the belief “it’s too late” or “I’m not capable.” These are just thoughts, not facts. We can reinvent ourselves at any age. Instead of asking “Can I do that?” try asking “What if I could?”. Read stories of people who’ve made bold changes to their lives. Listen to podcasts. Surround yourself with inspiration. The more you expose yourself to possibility, the more your vision will grow.
Turning Vision into Action
Vision doesn’t start with big leaps; it starts with small, steady actions. Create daily habits that support the expanded version of yourself.
Watch for Resistance and Move Through It
Part of you may hesitate as you step into a bigger, bolder version of yourself. Fear, self-doubt, and procrastination may try to rise up, but they are not in charge. When resistance comes, ask yourself, “What am I afraid of?” Then act anyway. Growth happens when we move beyond our comfort zone, even if just a little.
Living the Vision Daily
Your dream life begins with how you show up today. Speak kindly to yourself. Keep your vision in focus with daily reminders like a quote on your mirror, a photo on your phone, or a goal written in your planner. Check in with yourself often: Am I moving toward the life I want?
Conclusion
Expanding your vision is an ongoing process. You don’t have to have all the answers, just believe there are more answers to explore. This process is about possibilities and intentions. Start with the belief that more is possible for you, then take the next step forward.

Travel means different things to different people. For some, it’s about checking off the must-see sights and capturing the perfect photo.
Lifestyle change
After disappointing results of my cholesterol, blood pressure, and A1C at this month’s checkup, I’ve decided to commit to a “lifestyle change.”
When Life Feels Overwhelming
Lately, I’ve found myself sitting in the middle of my days, feeling like the world is just moving faster than I can keep up.
