Join Me on My French Learning Journey
Are you thinking about learning French but unsure where to begin? Whether you dream of strolling through Paris speaking French, watching French films without subtitles, or expanding your professional opportunities, learning French can open a world of possibilities. For me, learning French has been both rewarding and sometimes challenging, but the journey is worth it.
I began learning French using language apps like Babbel and Duolingo that provide comprehensive vocabulary and grammar lessons, making them ideal for beginners. While these apps have been great for building my vocabulary, I realized that they did not offer an opportunity for real-time conversation. As a result, I decided to start taking private lessons via Zoom. The lessons are sold in 5-hour increments, and the overall cost will depend on the total number of sessions taken.
To stay motivated and succeed, I reflected on my why for learning French. My purpose for learning French is to communicate while traveling in France. I want to be able to order food confidently in restaurants, ask for directions, and connect with locals to enrich my travel experience. By October, I aim to hold a basic conversation in French and understand common phrases used in travel situations. Learning French also contributes to my personal growth, and recalling my motivation during difficult times will keep me on track.
Although I've used language apps to learn French, I still see myself as a beginner. I will dedicate time each day to studying French, whether it's vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, speaking, homework, or using apps, to stay consistent. Speaking French is the most intimidating part of learning a language, but it's also the most important. Conversing with my tutor will be helpful because it will push me out of my comfort zone and allow me to practice real-life communication.
I know there will be days when learning French will be tough, so rewarding myself for reaching milestones should help motivate me. Taking French is a journey into a new culture, a new way of thinking, and a new version of myself. I’ll remind myself to stay patient, persistent, and unafraid to make mistakes. To track my progress, I will keep a journal of new phrases I learn and reflect on my conversational experiences after each lesson. With consistency and a positive attitude, I am confident that I will achieve my French learning goals and eventually feel comfortable communicating in real-world situations.
