Journey to Morocco – My First International Trip

When a friend invited me on a trip to Morocco to visit a friend in 2008, I looked back on that moment and realized it was destiny. At that time, I did not anticipate that traveling to distant places would become a part of my life. The first international trip is a rite of passage with the awakening of the senses and a broadening of the horizon. I decided to take that transformative leap to Morocco’ seeking new adventures and experience that would change my life.

The very notion of setting foot outside of the United States was overwhelming. As a first-time international traveler there was much to consider such as getting a passport, currency exchange, and packing. I learned about Morocco’s history and culture before my trip, growing more excited as departure approached.

Arriving at Casablanca airport, my senses came alive. Encountering signs in both French and Arabic, hearing unfamiliar languages spoken, and learning to operate the currency exchange machine contributed to an experience that was both challenging and rewarding. Outside the airport, haggling over the taxi fare and taking in the chaotic yet fascinating driving style of the country. The drive to the hotel revealed a city filled with palm-lined streets, whitewashed buildings, and bustling markets.

My heart was filled with excitement, and I remember feeling so alive and blessed. Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco and has the nickname “White City” referring to whitewashed buildings in the Old Medina, a historical area. We stayed at the Hotel Manor, a budget-friendly hotel located near the city center and the bus station.

Our first major stop was visiting the Hassan II Mosque. Standing in awe of its tower and intricate tile work we were captivated by the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The city’s top tourist spot offers breathtaking scenery and a profound sense of history. We also visited another attraction, the Medina, which is known for its vibrant markets and historic architecture. It is a place where visitors can explore and experience the city's culture. A traditional Moroccan meal includes stew with meat, vegetables, fruit, and olives. On the first night in Casablanca, the we ate at an outdoor restaurant. The meal and surroundings featured local dishes and views of the city lights.

We took a train across the Sahara to the city of Marrakech. I was swept away by the energy of the city’s legendary main square. I loved Marrakech with its terracotta buildings, bustling markets and vibrant atmosphere. We rode camels in the vast desert under the baking sun; our excitement mingled with exhaustion from the heat. We visited the Jardin Majorelle, a garden once owned by Yves Saint Laurent. This location provided a tranquil setting to reflect and absorb the vivid colors and dynamic sounds of the city, as well as to commit the camel ride experience to memory.

The most enduring memories of Morocco are the Moroccan people. Moroccan people are generous and warm-hearted. I learned that kindness is a universal language. Conversations ranged from philosophical to playful, crossing boundaries of language and experience. Morocco, my first international destination, changed me in ways I could not have anticipated.

The experience taught me openness to people, cultures and to the unknown. Travel to me is more than checking landmarks off a list, and more about immersing oneself in the rhythms of a place, letting it leave its mark on my heart.
