Traveling Sustainably
Lately, the news has been full of stories about destinations pushing back against over-tourism, and honestly, I get it. When I traveled to Italy this past March—what’s considered the off-season—I was surprised by how crowded it still was. It made me stop and think as travelers, especially as Americans, we need to be more mindful of the impact our adventures have on the places we love to visit. I started researching ways to make tourism sustainable.
Here are a few ways to support sustainable tourism:
Choose Eco-Friendly Stays
More and more hotels are embracing sustainability by conserving energy and water, reducing waste, and investing in renewable resources. During my trip to Rome, the hotel proudly highlighted its eco-friendly practices with little cards in the rooms, and it honestly felt good knowing my stay supported those efforts. It was a small reminder that even our lodging choices can make a difference.
Support Local Businesses
One of the best ways to travel responsibly is to spend your money where it matters most—within the community. Opt for family-owned hotels, dine at local restaurants, and shop at neighborhood markets. By doing so, you’re not only getting authentic experience, but you’re also helping create jobs, reduce poverty, and contribute to the long-term well-being of the local people.
Conserve Resources
Being mindful of how we use resources goes a long way. Simple habits like taking shorter showers, turning off lights and air conditioning when you’re out, and reusing towels or linens at your hotel can reduce your environmental footprint. Small actions add up!
Travel Sustainably
Whenever possible, swap out cars and taxis for more eco-friendly options. Walking, cycling, or using public transportation not only lowers emissions but also gives you a richer experience of the destination. Sometimes the journey itself becomes part of the adventure.
Minimize Plastic Waste
Plastic pollution is a global issue, but we can help reduce it while traveling. Carry a reusable water bottle instead of buying disposable ones, pack a reusable shopping bag, and say no to plastic straws and bags. These little swaps are easy to make and keep unnecessary plastic out of landfills and oceans.
Respect Local Culture and Customs
Travel isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s also about connecting with people and traditions. Do a little research before your trip to understand local etiquette, dress codes, and customs. Respecting cultural norms shows appreciation and helps preserve the identity of the community you’re visiting.
Embrace Sustainable Tourism
At its heart, sustainable tourism is about protecting the environment and supporting the well-being of local communities. When we make thoughtful choices, we encourage the travel industry to adopt more ethical practices. And in return, our journeys become more meaningful—leaving us with deeper connections and positive memories that go beyond the typical tourist experience.
